They started their career in 2009 when they each joined a music competition in an Italian show Ti lascio una canzone.  During the competition, the three of them were chosen to perform a classic song "O Sole Mio".  They continued to perform together even after the competition. At first, they used the names "Tre Tenor", "The Tryo" and "Il Trio" for their group name, and finally in 2010 they settled for the name "Il Volo" which means "the flight" in Italian.

On November 30, 2010, Il Volo released their self-titled debut album in Italy where it was certified platinum.  The following year, they released the album's international edition on April 12, 2011.
